The ride this morning with Axel was just the cure I needed.

This is the only moment since DuneFest started that my mind has felt clear. I left all my anxiety and nerves on the beach. Letting the waves roll over and pull them into the deep like a sunken ship hopefully never to be recovered.

I know my next steps.

I know the confrontation lying in front of me and I welcome the consequences of my actions.

I’m dressed in my riding gear and lined up at the starting gate for the Night Race Competition, Claire is only four riders away from me. Even from this distance I can feel her. Her warmth that I miss with every fiber of my being. The determination and drive that sparked passion inside of me.

Every time I see her in riding gear my cock twitches in my pants. But tonight the moonlight bouncing off her helmet and bike, giving the illusion she’s glowing, just about has me on my knees.

Seeing her like this threatens to unravel the pieces of my mind that I carefully stitched together beforehand.

It makes my heart sink to think that I may never get to kiss her again. That no matter how hard I try, nothing will compare to her embrace.

The announcer brings me out of my thoughts and into the present.

“Welcome riders to the Night Racccceee!” Cheers and yells thundered all around me. “Yes... yes,” he says while moving his hand up and down, telling the crowd to be quiet. “The Night race is everyone’s favorite… but also the most dangerous. The racers tonight will be battling for first place on a five mile straightaway, on wet sand. The only problem?” He gestures to the audience to answer for him.

“NO LIGHTS!!” They shout.

“Correct. Riders will have to drive by moonlight and the lights of their competition.” The crowd roars in excitement. “But don’t worry, our lovely DuneFest hosts have EMTs on call, and a station every mile in case of emergency. With that being said… Riders… Are you readyyyyyy?” Every racer revs their engines in response. Sending vibrations out through the sand and into the hearts of everyone around. Adrenaline spikes into the air, encasing everyone in anticipation and the crowd feeds on our determination.

A woman walks out a few feet in front of us holding a rolled up green flag. She signals to the crowd to start the countdown.

“10…9…8…7…6...5...4…3...2…1”

She drops the green flag.

Bikes speed past her and cause her hair to flip in every direction.

I am a few rows behind the starting line, so I’m already playing a game of catch-up.

I can feel the tether that ties Claire and I together and see she’s only a few bikes away from being first. I’m weaving in out of riders when we pass the first mile marker.

Only ten bikes away from first.

Claire is only two away.

She sneaks into second with only two miles to go.

I slip into fourth.

One mile to go.

She drops into 2nd and falls behind Dominic Linetti (who currently holds first).
